Romania’s iGaming industry is going from strength to strength, with the most recently published statistics (from 2021), showing the market is worth around €600,000. Romania is also one of the most iGaming friendly countries in Europe – with remote casinos and sportsbooks having a 65% share of the entire gambling market (only Sweden, Latvia and Lithuania are more iGaming-ready).
To launch an iGaming business in Romania, operators must use a payment system that is approved by the local regulator – it can be challenging to find a suitable partner. Although it’s possible for other EU/EEA-based websites to accept Romanian gamers, they must apply for a Romanian license. It’s illegal for Romanian players to gamble on unlicensed foreign gaming websites, and those websites risk being blocked if they accept Romanian gamers.
The ONJN (National Gambling Office) is responsible for regulating the iGaming market in Romania. There are different application and renewal fees for different kinds of gambling, but you will pay an annual authorization fee of 16% of revenue, annual license fees(minimum €6000 and up depending on revenues), plus a yearly responsible gambling contribution of €5000.
If you hope to launch an iGaming business to tap into Romania’s exciting online gambling market you will need a bank account, payment account or electronic money institution that can operate in the country. And this is where iGaming Core helps:
